Computers and Technology
Computer law encompasses a large number of rapidly-changing legal issues related to online transactions and activities, including social networking and e-commerce. Businesses should establish a strong online presence through judiciously selected domain names and the creation of a distinctive website. We can help you safeguard your intellectual property rights by perfecting copyrights and trademark rights. You may also face domain name conflicts attributable to cybersquatting and/or infringement of trademark rights. In that case, you may want to utilize cost-effective ICANN-sponsored electronic arbitration.
Bakal Law PLLC can assist you with preparing and negotiating system development contracts, non-disclosure and non-compete agreements, license agreements, and employee computer use and online access policies. When litigation occurs, we can speak the language of information technology professionals to best help you with electronic discovery and avoidance of potential non-production and spoliation sanctions. We will work with you to develop online protocols that comply with judicial requirements but also respect privacy and security under applicable state and federal law.

Having majored in Computer Science, founded his own computer company, RBI Software, and filed for computer copyright protections more than 30 years ago, Todd was at the forefront of computer and technology legal issues since before there even was a recognized field of computer law. In the late-1980's, as ARPANET and NSFNET gave way to become the Internet, Todd was actually present at its birth (with apologies to Al Gore) and was an active "blogger" through conferencing systems - before there was a web or a blog. He has written on defamation and privacy issues and served as an inaugural member of the New York City Bar Association President's Special Committee on Technology and Practice of Law and as a standing member of the Computer Law Committee. As an attorney, he has since represented businesses in multimillion dollar disputes arising from software and hardware acquisitions.
